The Milky Way Keeping Watch O'er the Shipwreck Donna Kay IV - Cape San Blas, Florida
The shrimping boat, the Donna Kay, ran aground on a sandbar near Cape San Blas, Florida, in September of 2018. She was pushed further inland by Hurricane Michael in October of that same year, sealing her fate. Numerous attempts to rescue or salvage her have failed, and she appears doomed to spend the next century rusting away under the Milky Way.
Starry night photos are best when printed on metallic papers, chromaluxe metal prints, acrylic, or canvas.
Remotely located in an unpopulated stretch of beach, the Donna Kay attracts many visitors. To visit requires a mile-long trek through a stretch of wilderness beach called called Stump Hole" by the locals. It is so named, because its location, at the southmost elbow of the cape, has seen her sands shift over time. This shift has befallen many a tree, as the waves inundate the roots with salt water, causing tree death, and ultimately only the fallen trunk and stump hole remain. It's enough of an adventure during the day, and by moonless night skies, a challenge. Careful planning is in order to ensure the tide status make the beach passable coming and going, with camera gear and provisions for a full night of shooting.
I've made the trek to the Donna Kay, five times now. Each time perfecting the images I want to portray of her. The colors are bright and revealing, as if somehow she's been caught in surprise by papparazzi. A proud dame, resigned to an unplanned fate.
