This stand of dwarf cypress is nestled deep within the Tate's Hell State Forest. Tate's Hell is a storied region in north Florida, as the name might imply, noted for its abundance of old growth specimens and unforgiving wildlife and insects. Here, a large swath of cypress trees developed above a shallow clay cap stunting the growth potential of the cypress. Their relatively short stature of 15' to 20' is far below the standard of 80' to 100', yet these trees may be hundreds of years old. This image is 1 of 3 taken on an early Fall day from an observation platform.
